Our Next Chapter

*If you haven't noticed, I'm catching up after a few months of silence, so this post is just for posterity's sake.*

Well friends, it's been kind of an 'open secret' that our sojourn in New York City is reaching an end, but now it's going "Facebook official."

It's been a decade since we first left home for college, and we've felt very much like nomads as we've uprooted ourselves time and again for each new chapter, from Chillicothe to Dayton, West Chester, Northern Kentucky, and now the Big Apple. Along the way we've found incredible communities of friends who have become a huge part of our lives, and NYC has been no exception - we truly love our church family at Apostles and we're so thankful to be a part of this Christ-centered community who have "done life" together with us. We have gone from high school sweethearts, to college kids, to newlyweds, to the parents of a rambunctious and incredible little boy. We've experienced the brokenness of being estranged from family members; the loneliness and weariness of five years worth of days, nights, and weekends juggling work and law school; the joy of bringing a new life into our family; the intimate presence of God in the midst of our anxieties and hurts; and a host of incredible adventures with which we'll regale our grandchildren one day.

Lauren and I have been praying and contemplating about what God might have in store for us after the "law school" chapter of our story comes to a close. In our hearts, we both share a deep yearning for "home" -- not only as sojourners longing for our heavenly home in the presence of our Lord, but also for our temporal home, for the place we've come from, for Ohio. We're ready to plant ourselves and to put down some roots for good, and to be near our family again; and so we're trusting God in faith that, in cultivating this desire in our hearts, He is preparing a place, a ministry, and a purpose for us and for our family in the Buckeye State. We're not sure exactly what that looks like, yet, but we remember how God laid a reassuring peace on our hearts when the opportunity came to move to NYC, and we feel that same reassuring peace now about returning home.

So, on May 20th, I will graduate with my JD from New York Law School, and a week later we will pack up our belongings to return to our old/new home, Ohio, where I will study for and take the bar exam in July 2016. By necessity, I'll be stepping down from my job at Columbia, and at this point I still have no definite prospects for employment in Ohio (though I have a growing pile of very polite rejection letters from several law firms). We trust that God will be faithful in providing for us and opening up a career opportunity for me, and we ask your prayers that He will meet that need for us according to His perfect timing. While we wait, we've decided to settle ourselves just outside of Columbus, OH (in Canal Winchester, to be specific) while I explore attorney positions across central and south-western Ohio.

We hope you'll join us in our excitement over our homecoming, and for those of our friends and family to whom we'll now be living MUCH closer after all this time, we look forward to catching up and sharing our lives with you again.
